There is a correlation between tooth sensitivity, tooth abrasion and gum recession. If you find yourself suffering from tooth sensitivity, we recommend that you have a thorough examination by your dentist. The medical team at the Savasta office can evaluate you and propose the correct treatment based on your needs.
When dental sensitivity occurs
It occurs when the dental enamel and dentin undergo thinning, consequently, to that when cold or hot foods are consumed the thermal stimuli will go to the inner part of the tooth element causing the pain.
Dental enamel acts as protection for dentin, the latter of which in turn protects the dental pulp.
Blood vessels and nerve endings are placed in the dental pulp.
Thinning of enamel and dentin causes these protective functions to fail.
What dental sensitivity is determined by
Dental abrasion and gingival recession can lead to this disorder.
Dental abrasion when it is very advanced causes tooth yellowing, and teeth will appear shorter than normal.
Therefore, in addition to being very aesthetically unpleasant, this condition also presents a major problem because it exposes the teeth to greater than normal sensitivity.
Patients are advised to see a dentist quickly if they think they are suffering from tooth abrasion and not to wait for symptoms to worsen.
It should be differentiated to avoid confusion with dental erosion.
Erosion is caused by acidic substances that ruin tooth enamel, these are acidic foods, acidic drinks, or substances that come from within the body such as gastric juices, vomit.
Abrasion can be caused by age, use of abrasive substances, and improperly used toothbrush during daily oral hygiene procedures.
Abrasion can be treated by application of veneers, composite reconstruction, devitalization.
Another cause is gingival recession, which takes place when the gum tissue wears away, it can be caused by unsuitable cleaning characterized by excessive use of the toothbrush in terms of energy and force, using the toothbrush too excessively can lead the gums to recede, the advice is not to use toothbrushes that have bristles that are too hard precisely to avoid such problems.
Desensitization treatments
- A typical desensitization treatment involves applying the appropriate gel to the templates; the frequency of treatment will be determined by the dentist.
- Laser is another very viable option for desensitization: it goes to occlude the dentinal tubes, narrows the lumen of the tubules, then vitrifies the exposed tubules so as to implement desensitization.
Products used for desensitization
- Appropriate toothpastes
- Specific mouthwashes for desensitization
- Paints with sodium fluoride
- Appropriate gels
- Specific lacquers
It should be made clear that such products should be used only and exclusively after being prescribed by the dentist who will evaluate your situation.
The medical team at the Savasta practice will examine you, inquire about your clinical history and first try to understand the cause of the disorder, once discovered they will act accordingly.
You will not only go to treat tooth sensitivity as it is important to treat the underlying cause of the problem.
In a patient with dental abrasion, this issue must be treated first; it would not make sense to treat the tooth sensitivity first without having eradicated the source of the underlying problem.
