What we are talking about

In recent years, theimplantology has evolved dramatically to allow for extremely faster operations while bringing as little pain as possible to the patient. Among the best-known techniques is undoubtedly immediate loading implantology, which involves the placement of a temporary fixed prosthesis at the same time that the implant is placed in the bone.

Very different, however, is deferred load implantology, which does not involve the placement of a temporary fixed prosthesis. In fact, with this technique, the dentition is left unsupported for the necessary period.

But what are the differences between these two techniques? We find out in this article.

What is immediate loading implantology?

Basically, load-bearing implantology is immediate is a technique that allows you to have fixed teeth virtually immediately.

Beware, however, one is often led to think that with this type of operation it provides for the immediate insertion of the definitive prosthesis. This is actually not the case; the prosthesis is temporary and can be worn for about six months, after which it will necessarily be replaced by the permanent one.

In any case, thanks to immediate loading implantology, one can safely replace each individual tooth or the entire arch.

What are the advantages of immediate loading implantology?

Immediate loading implantology uses titanium implants, thus a biocompatible material. Importantly, the use of titanium implants has several positive features, such as the fact that the danger of developing infections is averted.

Anyway, coming to the main question, the advantages of immediate loading implantology are many. First of all, it is a minimally invasive procedure that causes no particular pain or discomfort. In addition, it is a quick operation that in the vast majority of cases results in extremely little blood loss. Finally, immediate loading implantology allows a prompt recovery, including chewing.

What is deferred load implantology?

Deferred loading implantology was used predominantly years ago, its emergence in the 1970s by Professor Branemark. Today, deferred load implantology is used only in cases where the patient's clinical situation allows it.

The major difference from immediate loading implantology is that in this case once the operation is completed it is necessary to wait three to six months to allow for osseointegration. In any case, however, the patient will be fitted with a temporary prosthesis until osseointegration is complete.

This technique is performed in two stages, the first involves the insertion of the titanium implant. While in the second stage, an abutment is fixed onto which the crown will then be fixed.

What are the advantages of deferred load implantology?

The main advantage is that delayed loading implantology is effective even in rather poor bone conditions. It is also particularly suitable for patients with bruxism, which is a condition in which they grind their teeth.

In conclusion, which of the two options is better?

We have seen what the main differences are between these two techniques. Of course, immediate loading implantology allows you to recover very quickly and, most importantly, to have fixed teeth right away. In any case, delayed loading implantology is also absolutely effective.
