Unfortunately, many people suffer from granulomas and dental cysts: it can happen that these issues do not give rise to symptoms until the situation is already quite serious.
To be able to intercept problems before they have negative effects, it is important to do prevention and undergo regular checkups.The specialists at Savasta Medical Office are ready to welcome you to take care of the health of your mouth. But let's try to understand together what granulomas and dental cysts are.
What are granulomas: causes, symptoms and treatment
Achronic inflammation affecting the root apex of teeth, that is, the area where the tooth elements i graft onto the bone, is called a granuloma.
Inflammation can originate from several causes, the most common being tooth fracture or the presence of untreated caries. Such situations if neglected, lead to significant bacterial overgrowth, which can, precisely lead to the development of granuloma.
Initially the inflammation affects only the involved tooth, but if not properly treated it can expand, creating far more serious problems for the health of the oral cavity and other organs.
It is possible to identify your types of granuloma:
- The simple granuloma, which is the most common granuloma;
- the granuloma abscess, which is the one within which a chronic-type abscess develops.
As mentioned, granuloma often gives no signs of its presence: it can remain asymptomatic for a long time, and by the time the patient begins to detect symptoms the situation has already become serious. The most frequent sitnomas are gum swelling, toothache, sore eyes, and enlarged lymph nodes.
In order to be able to detect the presence of inflammation before it reaches a certain severity, it is necessary to do prevention, that is, to do checkups.
In fact, granuloma can be detected even with a simple radiograph. In any case, when the patient presents to the dental office, he or she undergoes the appropriate diagnostic examinations, which will make it possible to locate the problem and understand which teeth are involved.
The procedure normally resorted to when such inflammation is present is devitalization: the tooth is emptied of pulp and thoroughly cleaned, before being reconstructed.
Dental cysts: types and treatment
Cysts are small balls that form in the jaw bones due to a particular stimulus involving tissue transformation.
Cysts consist of a lining and an inner part composed of serum and fluid; over time they can increase in size.
Dental cysts can be caused by several factors: deep caries, pulpitis, trauma, dental inclusion, an extraction not performed well, a devitalization done the wrong way, the evolution of an untreated granuloma.
The presence of a cyst can cause several symptoms: gum swelling, toothache, halitosis, swollen lips, bad breath, and in some cases even tooth mobility.
Three different types of cysts can also be identified:
- root cysts, the most common, are often caused by a granuloma and involve the apex of the tooth that has an infected root canal and necrotic pulp;
- Follicular cysts are less common and are those that form around the crown even before the tooth has completed its eruption;
- Periodontal cysts are those that involve the periodontium and are related to periodontitis.
Again, the diagnosis is made by radiography. The examinations allow the dentist to identify the type of cyst and consequently, choose how to intervene.
RADICULAR cysts, if they are still small, can be treated with ENDODONTIC treatment; however, if they are already "overgrown," it will be necessary to proceed withsurgical extraction; only in the most severe cases should the tooth be extracted. Follicular cysts are treated onsurgical removal.
Periodontal cysts can be extracted only after successful treatment of the periodontitis that caused them. Of course, the procedures are performed under local anesthesia: the patient feels no pain during the treatment.
Granulomas and dental cysts are very common and sneaky problems; prevention plays a key role-the medical team at the Savasta office is ready to welcome you and find the right solution for your situation.
