Gum reconstruction

Gum reconstruction is one of the most common oral surgery procedures. Gums play a vital role in the oral cavity. Therefore, if they are affected by pathology, they can lead to various dental problems.

Therefore, as soon as gum disease occurs, it is advisable to talk to the dentist immediately, before negative consequences can occur.

Dr. Savasta's practice deals with gum reconstruction, using the most modern methods. So let's see what the reasons are for needing this procedure, and how it is performed.

When it is necessary to reconstruct the gums

The gums are very important for the mouth, as they perform a defense function for the periodontium and the alveolar arch. The periodontium in turn keeps the tooth anchored to the bone, so we understand well that it is a system in which all parts are connected to each other.

The main factors that lead to the need for gum reconstruction are gingivitis, gingival recession, and periodontitis.

Going into specifics, periodontitis or pyorrhea consists of receding gums, and the formation of interdental black spaces due to plaque accumulation.

Teeth appear yellow and elongated, and there may also be loss of gum tissue. If not treated in time this condition can degenerate, leading in the worst cases to tooth loss.

Gingival recession is a process due to which the gums gradually recede, exposing the tooth to attack by pathogens.

There is also increased sensitivity to hot or cold foods and drinks. Also, as in the case of pyorrhea, teeth appear more elongated. Canines and premolars tend to be at greater risk.

How we reconstruct the gums

If the gums regenerated, it would certainly be easier to preserve the teeth. Unfortunately, these are tissues that as soon as they are damaged can only be reconstructed surgically by the specialist.

So let's see how the medical team at Studio Savasta goes about reconstructing the gums depending on the pathology present.

If we are faced with gingival recession, we can intervene either surgically or with a class five filling. We usually resort to oral surgery when the central teeth are affected and therefore there is also an aesthetic motivation.

Therefore, we can implement either gum tissue grafting or gum repositioning. We opt for either type of surgery depending on the starting situation.

Gingival grafting is used in cases where gingival thickness needs to be increased, and is implemented by taking gingival tissue from the palate, or artificial collagen grafts are used.

Thanks to the light microscope, great precision can be achieved. In addition, local anesthesia is used, and the patient will feel no pain.

Repositioning is ideal in cases of high and thick gingiva. We then proceed to peel back the gingiva, position it correctly, and proceed to suture it to cover the exposed part of the tooth.

In the case of posterior teeth, composite filling can be opted for, since it is a non-visible and less aesthetically impactful part. The patient may as well opt for the surgical procedure if he or she wants a more esthetically pleasing result

In the postoperative phase it is possible to experience some discomfort or pain, which can be resolved by taking painkillers. Swelling, on the other hand, can be reduced by doing ice packs on the face.

But is there a way to avoid getting to gum reconstruction? As always with regard to dentition, the way to reduce the occurrence of most diseases is prevention. This is the advice we give to patients.

Excluding specific factors, in general much dental problems can be attributed to poor behavior. First of all, it is important to take care of daily oral hygiene by gently brushing teeth with a soft toothbrush.

Exerting too much force with hard bristles can in fact damage gum tissue.

At least once every 6 months, it is best to have a professional hygiene session for deeper cleaning to minimize plaque buildup.

It is equally important to undergo checkups, through which the dentist can check the health condition of the teeth. Therefore, it only takes a few but essential rules to follow to have a beautiful and at the same time healthy smile.

So if you think you are suffering from any of these gum diseases, we urge you not to neglect your situation, but to take care of your teeth right away. Your physical and also psychological balance depends on them.
